Hawks Almost Knock Off Tough Vero Beach Indians
by Bob Markey

Traditional powerhouse Vero Beach rebounded from its first loss of the season the week before to edge Seminole Ridge 13-7 last Friday in The Acreage.

Josh Jackson was 10-for-18 for 116 yards and a touchdown to lead the Hawks  by the air on a night when rain and mud made the passing game difficult at best.

But Vero Beach's running game - which amassed 209 yards on 39 carries - was enough to drop the Hawks to 4-4 on the season.

The Hawks scored their only touchdown in the late third quarter when Curtis Griswold caught a 1-yard pass from Jackson.

By that time, the Indians (7-1) had hit two field goals (24-yarder in the first quarter and 19-yarder in the second) and scored one touchdown - a 16-yard run by Ben Harrison (94 yards to lead all rushers).

Seminole Ridge was held to 73 yards on the ground, led by Griswold with nine rushed for 28 yards and William Jones with six rushes for 25 yards.

Jeacky Charles stood out among all receivers with 85 yards on four catches for the Hawks. Devyn Pierson had three catches for 30 yards.

Seminole Ridge will play its second to last game against another tough opponent, Palm Beach Gardens, away at 7 p.m. tonight (Nov. 2).

Wildcats Gridders Can Win District By Defeating PB Central Tonight
by Bob Markey
Despite heavy rain and a muddy field and an undefeated opponent, Royal Palm Beach High School made a solid claim to defend the District 9-6A title last Friday with a 24-10 victory over Park Vista.

Down 10-7 at the half after a long Cobras pass for a touchdown, the Wildcats racked up 17 consecutive points in the second half, while limiting Vista's running game to 80 yards.

RPB coach Eric Patterson said his team "came out fighting" and played an "inspired" game.

Sophomore Chris Dunkley caught a 20-yard fly pass and then scampered another 85 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter. He was the top receiver in the game with 116 yards on two receptions.

RPB halted a Park Vista drive that ended with a field goal, but the Cobras stunned the Wildcats with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Norfus as the second quarter expired to take the lead.

The Wildcats tied the game in the third quarter on a 41-yard field goal by senior Corey Inman.

In the fourth, they took the lead for good on a 1-yard run by  junior quarterback Marvin Payne, who was 6-for-14 for 149 yards with one interception.

RPB put the game away on an interception 32-yard return for a touchdown by junior Perry McIntyre.

Sophomore Javonti Greene (36 yards on six carries) and senior Ernest Ferguson (33 yards on seven carries) and made up the bulk of the Wildcats' 79 yards on the ground.

With the win, the Wildcats can claim no less than second place in the district and a playoff spot, or part of a three-way tied for first place with a victory over Palm Beach Central tonight (Nov. 2). But to tie for first, Park Vista must defeat Lake Worth  - which defeated RPB by one point in a rain and gunfire-plagued game on Oct. 19.  In that case, a three-way shootout game would determine the champion.

Local Football Teams Try To Rebound Tonight
by Bob Markey

It was not a good weekend for any of the Palms West Communities' public high schools. All lost.
Wellington dropped its sixth consecutive game to Lake Worth, 27-6.

The Wolverines kept the game tight early, falling behind 7-0 on a run by Doug Perry. Wellington QB Chad Endres - who ran for 85 of his team's 102 yards, but had just 7 yards in the air and one interception - scored in the second quarter.

But Perry scored again for Lake Worth (4-2) in the second and the rest of the game was all Lake Worth.
The Wolverines host Palm Beach Gardens at 7:30 tonight (Oct. 12) at Corepoint Stadium.

Palm Beach Central (1-4) was defeated 35-6 at Park Vista. It was the Broncos' fourth consecutive loss.

Zed Joseph returned a kickoff 76 yards for Central's only touchdown in the first quarter to tie the game. But Park Vista did all the rest of the scoring, leading 21-6 after one quarter and adding a touchdown in each of the second and third quarters.

Central was held to 8 passing yards and -5 rushing yards, while Park Vista amassed 281 yards on the ground.

The Broncos travel down the road at 7:30 tonight to Greenacres to play at John I. Leonard's new stadium.

Royal Palm Beach was edged on Thursday, Oct. 4, by Palm Beach gardens, 17-13.

The Wildcats went back to the air as QB Marvin Payne was 14-for-29 and 192 yards.

But Gardens' Josh Sheppard led the Gators with 149 yards on the ground in the victory.

Royal Palm Beach hosted Boynton Beach at 7 p.m. Thursday night (Oct. 11) at Palms West Hospital Stadium.

Wildcats Walloped

by Bob Markey
Royal Palm Beach High School made great improvement on offense and defense late in its season-debut football game last Thursday night near Jupiter. But unfortunately for the Wildcats, they spotted the strong W.T. Dwyer Panthers (1-0) an almost insurmountable a 38-point lead. The RPBHS offense turned to spread passing routes and moved well, and the defense stiffened after the half. Fumbles, interceptions - one returned for a touchdown - and a block punt for a touchdown, however, doomed the Wildcats to a 51-14 non-conference loss. Coach Eric Patterson said despite being outplayed, the Wildcats (0-1) would go back to practice, improve their preparation and get back on the winning track they blazed with 10 straight victories in 2006.

RPB Wildcats defeat Wolverines
by Tamara Cook
The Royal Palm Beach Wildcats faced the Wellington Wolverines for the second time this season in girls volleyball action. The location was different, but the outcome was the same, as the Wildcats outlasted the Wolverines 25-22, 25-11 and 27-25.

RPB was led by senior setter Brigett Brandjes with 20 assists and 17 digs. Senior middle hitter Kala Abdell led all hitters with 16 kills and 11 blocks. Sophomore Cassady Cook contributed to the win with 9 service points, 5 kills and 6 blocks.

In the third game, the Wildcats were down 18-24. It looked as thought the match was going to a fourth game, when sophomore Taylor Johnson came in to serve. She brought the 'Cats up to even the score at 24-24., then pulled ahead to 25-24 before they gave to ball back to Wellington. The Wolverines couldn't produce any points on serve and gave it back to Royal Palm. Cook served once to get Royal Palm the win, which ended with a K. Abdell kill.

Johnson ended the game with 12 service points, of which 6 were aces, plus 7 digs. Senior libero Jessica Fasig had 16 digs, while freshman Shaina Abdell contributed 9 service points, and senior defensive specialist Ambar Mila had 4 digs . Sophomore Jessica Morrison rounded out the defense with 4 digs.
